A Russian Su-24 “Fencer” buzzes the guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) in international waters in the Baltic Sea on April 11-12. This was one of numerous passes over the ship, including close passes and orbits around the ship by a Russian KA-27 “Helix” helicopter that the US European Command described as “unsafe and unprofessional.” At the time of the first passes by the Su-24, the American destroyer was refueling its helicopter on the deck, and was forced to halt operations until the Russians were finished. Such passes are nothing new, but the Russians are getting bolder, and more dangerous, in recent months as the US and NATO hold exercises in international waters close to the Russian homeland.

Seems like a good opportunity to let a CIWS stretch its legs.

Shit shit shit! How do you say “negative, Ghost Rider!” in Russian?!

So what happens if they paint them with radar and arm a SAM? Would they GTFO or what?

Well, there certainly non-Oppo Russian Helicopters...

Hard to say. During the Cold War, this sort of stuff was pretty routine, but more professional. Russia is a wounded bear right now, and acting accordingly.

The Su-24s would probably be more dangerous as screaming fireballs than if you just left them alone.

I like to think of most Russian aircraft designs as being brutally and industrially efficient.

yeah, I respect that about russian design, but lets not be confused...they are ugly as crud.

Doesn’t have to be pretty to be dangerous.

I’m partly convinced that the US military brass chose against the X-32 simply because it doesn’t look like a “normal” airplane. The same reason they voted against the F-23.

YF-23 is dead sexy though.
I think F22 was chosen to keep Lockheed in the aircraft business.

I think Russia is just trying to get rid of surplus Fencers at this point.
